LW1 - Azurite - $750 SOLD Chessy, Rhone, France miniature, 3.7 x 3 x 2.4 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Lovely cluster of highly lustrous Azurite blades (up to .6 cm) that positively ‘glow’ under good light. Hard to believe, but the color is even better in person – it has an incredible royal purple tint to the azure blue the equal of which I do not believe I have seen before. This is quite a beautiful specimen, with only one contacted area on the back edge that has no impact on the overall aesthetics. These are all OLD CLASSICS from the early to mid 1800s!
LW2 - Manganite - $1200 SOLD Atikokan, Hutchinson Township, Ontario, Canada cabinet, 12.5 x 6.5 x 3.2 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Dense forest of beautiful 1 cm Manganite blades that have superb luster and form. The front edge of the specimen has many of the blades exposed, therefore allowing the excellent striations to be easily seen and appreciated. That contrast between the exposed blades and the dense growth of blades creates a marvelously aesthetic piece. It is far better in person and among the best of these that I have seen - Marty was in fact quite proud of his manganites. This is an exceptional specimen that stands far above the pieces we have previously seen on the market, which he obtained from the miners. It is so good, in fact, it looks Kalahari and not Canadian!
LW3 - Anglesite - $850 Toussit Mine, Ouijda, Morocco miniature, 4.5 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Good Anglesites are hard to find today as most came out in the 1980s or earlier; and so this 2+ cm crystal is well worth taking a hard look at. This crystal has a fine lemon-yellow color, excellent luster, and a gemmy termination edge. The back surface is somewhat contacted, which is of little consequence; and the small included Galenas near the tip add even more visual interest to the specimen.
LW4 - Quartz (Japan Law) - $750 Naru-shima Island, Goto city, Nagasaki prefecture, Japan miniature, 5 x 3.8 x 2 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
This is one of the best miniature Japan Law twins that I have come across. The clarity of the twin crystal is unusually good and the aesthetics of the twin superimposed on the large gemmy single is really quite remarkable. A few small dings on the crystal tips are barely noticeable as you gaze at the specimen. Overall, this is a terrific miniature.
LW5 - Limonite (iridescent) on Quartz - $300 SOLD Graves Mountain, Lincoln County, Georgia miniature, 5.2 x 4.1 x 3.1 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Superb six-sided euhedral crystal of quartz coated with limonite ("turgite"), with a resplendent iridescence that is as bright and colorful as you could ask for. In person, it tops the pics! This is just a magnificent example of a normally worthless mineral, because of the colors...classic in old specimens form this locality but rarely seen today!
LW6 - Serandite with Analcime and Aegerine - $1800 SOLD Mont Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada miniature, 5.5 x 4 x 2.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Very attractive combination specimen with a terrific Serandite crystal as the centerpiece. This crystal is an amazing 3.6 cm on edge, 1.2 cm thick, and has the classic deep salmon-flesh color and lustre. The lustrous Aegerine crystal along one side is 2 cm long, and the Analcime crystals do exhibit some well-defined crystal faces. This specimen is from the famous pockets of late 1976, with this distinct combination of balancing analcime! There is some minute edge wear not visible at first as you can see, but considering the overall quality and importance of this specimen as an aesthetic miniature, it is minimal.
LW7 - Manganite - $950 SOLD Atikokan, Hutchinson Township, Ontario, Canada miniature, 4 x 2.7 x 2 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Choice Manganite that has blocky crystals up to 1.2 cm with razor-sharp edges and excellent luster. It is very rare to find Manganites in this habit and size with such quality. Marty prided himself on obtaining some of the best from the miners as they came out in the 1990s and I regard this as a very important and significant specimen.
LW8 - Pyrite - $2000 SOLD Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Province, Peru small cabinet, 7.5 x 6 x 5.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Lustrous and quite beautiful Pyrite composed of sharp octahedrons up to 4 cm on edge, COMPLETELY formed atop a pedestal of smaller crystals. The tips are modified and show very attractive striations, while the luster is split between mirror-like and attractively etched. This is a superior Pyrite specimen. NOT your common quality! In fact, I'd say few, a miniscule percentage under 0.0001% of specimens, are of this quality. IT IS complete all around, STUNNING, AND so far above the normal quality, you cannot believe it.
LW9 - Millerite - $950 SOLD Thompson Pit, Thompson, Manitoba, Canada small cabinet, 8.7 x 6 x 5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
A large , VERY rich specimen of the rare nickel mineral Millerite, with the display face covered with dense, velvety acicular crystals of a deep brassy green. The golden sheen of the crystals is prominent, attractive, and it accents the radial growth beautifully. Fine specimen! Marty was the source of many of the best of these specimens over the years they came out in the late 90s, and this is one he obviously chose to keep , given its quality and unusual 3-dimensionality (most are flat plates).
LW11 - Elpidite - $200 SOLD Mont Saint-Hilaire, Rouville County, Quebec, Canada miniature, 5.5 x 4.3 x 3.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
This is a very rich specimen of the relatively rare hydrated sodium zirconium silicate Elpidite, seen here in a specimen from the prolific Mont Saint - Hilaire locality. They are often seen in single sprays without matrix, but these sprays do occur on matrix and are remarkably well-defined with individual blades up to 2 cm long!
LW12 - Amethyst and Smoky Quartz - $450 SOLD Brandberg, Erongo Region, Namibia small cabinet, 6.3 x 5.2 x 3.8 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
A beautiful cluster of deeply hued superb Amethyst crystals, the two largest being over 5.5 cm in length. These gemmy crystals have fine purple upper halves which grade into a very fine smoky quartz in their lower halves, and the terminations are skeletal. Brandbergs have a well-deserved reputation as being high-quality amethysts, and these are certainly in that tradition.
LW13 - Pyromorphite - $2500 SOLD Bunker Hill Mine, Kellogg, Idaho miniature, 4.6 x 1.8 x 1.7 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Very fine 4.6 cm , elongated crystal that has excellent hoppered form, fair to excellent (along three sides) luster, and good brownish orange color. The main crystal is accented by smaller, equally attractive, crystals in the front and back. Elegant and unusual specimen from the mid 1990s!.
LW14 - Scheelite (fluorescent) on Quartz - $175 SOLD Tong Wha, Chungcheongbukdo , South Korea small cabinet, 6.4 x 2.8 x 2.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Imagine having a doubly-terminated Quartz floater liberally covered with a dozen sharp Scheelites up to .5 cm. The Scheelites are smoky with a beautiful translucence and a superb luster. Both the Scheelites and the small accessory Calcites fluoresce, and some of the Scheelites have the characteristic notching near the termination. Admittedly, there is some dinging to a few, but they really do not detract from the fact that this is an attractive classic from a famous old classic locality.
LW15 - Azurite - $450 Hanover Mine #2, Fierro, Grant County, New Mexico miniature, 4.3 x 3.3 x 2.7 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Remarkable specimen consisting of three well-developed sprays of prismatic Azurite blades. The Azurites have excellent luster and superb color – rich but not so deep that you couldn’t appreciate the luscious azure blue color of each and every crystal. Rarely do you find these crystal clusters o nmatrix, and then rarely in such richness on the matrix, as this specimen! A superb specimen, especially for New Mexico.
