from the MARTIN LEWADNY COLLECTION
LTH-02 - Pyromorphite - $ 150 SOLD Society Girl Mine, Kootenay, British Colombia, Canada toenail, 3 x 2 x 1.3 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
The Society Girl Mine is the most famous, and finest, of the uncommon Canadian Pyromorphite localities. On top of that, matrix specimens themselves are rare and highly-sought after. This excellent example has well-shaped green crystals up to 4 mm, and they cover the matrix in abundance. Quite sparkling and of a unique color.
LTH-03 - Vanadinite (orange) - $ 500 ACF Mine, Mibladen, Morocco miniature, 3.3 x 1.3 x 1.7 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Attractive, and quite unusual, this orange-red Vanadinite consisting of a series of stacked tabular crystals. The color is a fine and bright fire-like hue, and each of the crystals has very good luster and complex individual habit, almost rosettes perched upon tabular crystals. The largest is about 2.5 x 2.3 x .2 cm. Very aesthetic. AND, there is a definite weird orangey color to this piece! it is not a pure red tone as usual. FLOATER!
LTH-04 - Hackmanite (variety of Sodalite) (fluor) - $ 175 SOLD Kokscha Valley, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan thumbnail, 2.8 x 2.1 x 1.3 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
A remarkable, sharp, isolated Hackmanite (Sodalite) crystal, the quality of which I have not often seen. It is actually complete all around, nicely perched and exposed so the backside is revealed as well. The light lavender-colored crystal is 1.3 cm across, gemmy to translucent, very lustrous, and sharp. This well formed dodecahedron has beveled edges which add greatly to the interest, as does a lovely rose fluorescence. An excellent thumbnail example.
LTH-05 - Rhodochrosite (in basalt) - $ 275 SOLD Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico thumbnail, 3.1 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
This lustrous, gemmy, and red 1.5 cm Rhodochrosite is simply exquisite. As good as the pics are, it is even better in person. A killer thumbnail rhodochrosite from Mexico, where such are very uncommon! This would be old material, probably 1960s vintage. Well-trimmed to make it a superb , balanced, thumbnail specimen
LTH-06 - Selenite (fluorescent) - $ 145 SOLD Block and Brady One Pit, Red River Floodway, near, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada toenail, 3.2 x 2 x 1.8 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
A small, well-formed ball of twinned crystals of Selenite, with one super-gemmy 1.6 cm twinned crystal growing prominently out from the ball. This color, and this gemminess, is quite unusual. The Selenites formed in the clay beds of the Red River Floodway near Winnipeg, as floater balls of crystals. Under UV light, this beautiful Selenite crystal fluoresces green. In addition, it phosphoresces after the UV light is turned off. Sharp, beautiful, and aesthetic. The only such kille rexample I have seen in a TN sized specimen
LTH-07 - Silver - $ 1800 Keeley-Frontier Mine, South Lorrain Township, Ontario, Canada thumbnail, 2.5 x 1.9 x 1.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Attractive spiral wire Silver from the Keeley-Frontier Mine in Ontario. Not often do you see a wire Silver in a well-defined spiral like this, nor do you you find one that looks so aestheric and delicate, yet it is firm and strong. An excellent Silver from a rare locale, that is also a major thumbnail specimen.
LTH-08 - Azurite - $ 750 SOLD Tsumeb Mine, Otjikoto Region, Namibia thumbnail, 3.2 x 2.7 x 1.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Choice cluster of superbly-lustrous, deep-blue Azurite crystals from the world-famous Tsumeb Mine. Each mirror-like crystal has an excellent termination, and they sit wonderfully on the matrix. The largest of the crystals is 1.7 cm tall. Impressive and aesthetic - rarely can you find such a fine balance in a MATRIX thumbnail specimen of azurite from Tsumeb.
LTH-09 - Fluorite - $ 900 Argentiere Glacier, Mt. Blanc Massif, Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France thumbnail, 2.3 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Sharp and aesthetic, this light pink Fluorite is an impressive 1.5 cm on edge. And it sits perfectly up on the matrix. One of the rare aspects of the Fluorites on matrix from the Argentiere Glacier is that they are found on Adularia a rare association. For a Competition level thumbnail, this is an OUSTANDING example because it has balance, and is on matrix; and really could not be any bigger and still be a thumbnail specimen. the thing about truly great matrix thumbnails is its easy to find loose singles of many things, but a balanced matrix makes the piece here, as well as in larger specimens
LTH-10 - Mimetite - $ 750 San Pedro Correlitos, Chihuahua, Mexico miniature, 3.1 x 2.7 x 1.8 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Very good cluster of botryoidal Mimetite from the classic locality of San Pedro Correlitos, and the one-time find there in 1968. The color is VERY good (TOP yellow color saturation for this material, without the usual hints of orange or brown), and the silky luster gives the Mimetite a lovely visual richness. The largest of the spheres is an amazing 1.5 cm across. An excellent Mimetite with top combination of color and lustre, that is more rare today than people think. Few of this quality seem to have survived the years undamaged. . Formerly in the Sam Nasser collection
LTH-11 - Amethyst with hematite inclusions - $ 75 SOLD Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada thumbnail, 2.5 x 2.3 x 1.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Superb pair of doubly-terminated, very lustrous Amethyst crystals from the famous locality of Thunder Bay. Each crystal is 2.5 cm in length. What is so rare about these, in addition to the unusual red coloration due to included Hematite, is tha fact that these Amethysts are doubly-terminated. In fact, both are DT'd, and virtually pristine. One of the most aesthetic specimens I have seen from Thunder Bay in any size
LTH-12 - Dioptase (large XL) - $ 1800 Reneville, Brazzaville Department, Republic of Congo thumbnail, 2.9 x 2 x 1.2 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Exceptional, 2.9 cm doubly-terminated Dioptase from an older, classic locality. The luster is excellent, and the color a deep, beautiful green. One termination is partially contacted, but to find a DT Dioptase of this size so complete, and aesthetic, is unusual. This is a domninating, HUGE single crystal and makes for a fullsized thumbnail of some impact. It is a very fat, robust crystal that LOOKS like Tsumeb material (which would be thrice the price).
LTH-13 - Smithsonite - $ 450 SOLD Broken Hill Mine, Kabwe, Central Province, Zambia thumbnail, 2.4 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Quality Smithsonite crystals are hard enough to come by, and they are particularly uncommon from Zambia, so this excellent piece deserves accolades- it is exquisite! This superb cluster is composed of four major, individual crystals, as well as several smaller ones. Several are doubly-terminated, and the largest is an impressive 2 cm long. Each complex crystal is gemmy, with a silky luster that causes the crystals to almost glow under good light. Additionally, the crystals have wide, modified stepped faces with a small amount of rotation that increase the interest and appeal mineralogically. Just a wonderful thumbnail. Ex. Stan Korowski collection (he was an exploration geologist in Zambia in the 1950s-1960s).
LTH-14 - Lazulite - $ 950 Rapid Creek, Yukon Territory, Canada thumbnail, 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.8 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Lazulite is a rare magnesium aluminum phosphate, and some of the finest and best known specimens of this mineral come from Rapid Creek. The area around Rapid Creek is only accessible for a few months in the summer for collecting (it’s under snow and ice the rest of the year), and has some of the toughest collecting conditions. This fine thumbnail is a cluster of very lustrous, sharp crystals, or unusual size - particularly the three main Lazulites. The largest of these deep blue, complex tabular to blocky crystals is over 1 cm across. There are a few very minor dings, unobtrusive and in effect trivial. This is not just a very good thumbnail, it is a superb example of the species in extraordinarily large crystals for the locale. In strong light, it is an evident blue color, more so than the photos here appear..
LTH-15 - Uvarovite on Quartz - $ 400 SOLD Outokumpu ore field, Ita-Suomen Laani, Finland thumbnail, 2.6 x 2.5 x 2.3 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
A sharp, lustrous, deep green Uvarovite garnet crystal with excellent emerald-green color from the famous Outokumpu Mine of Finland. The sharp, 1.2 cm crystal has textbook dodecahedral form and is in remarkably good condition. Uvarovite is the calcium chromium garnet group end member. This is a classic specimen from a premier locality, with a relatively large crystal. It makes for a very aesthetic thumbnail
LTH-16 - Adamite - $ 145 SOLD Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico thumbnail, 3.2 x 2.1 x 1.4 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Choice, complete pinwheel of the beautiful yellow Adamite from the famous Ojuela mine in Mexico, sitting perfectly on matrix. The gemmy crystals in this radial growth have excellent luster and color, and the pinwheel itself is 1.4 cm across. Excellent bright yellow fluorescence. Distinct and aesthetic thumbnail specimen , and vintage oldstyle material from the 1970s-1980s
