the Richard Hauck Collection
RH02-03 - Argentite on Calcite - ¥ 21552 Pribram, Bohemia, Czech Republic miniature, 5.1 x 5.1 x 2.0 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Sharp, lustrous argentite crystals to 9mm nestled in a small pocket of quartz crystals on a massive quartz matrix. The largest argentite crystal appears to have been hollowed out or "hoppered" during formation yet is still well terminated. Unique, old European classics like this are very difficult to obtain.
RH02-06 - Copper "chisel sliver" from 1860 - ¥ 34483 SOLD from the famous 40-ton nugget, Eagle River, Lake Superior District, Michigan small cabinet, 8.0 x 2.8 x 1.3 cm ex. Richard Hauck
A great, historical old piece cut by hand with chisel and hammer from a 40-ton piece of native copper! This find was famous. They hit a lode so rich that huge copper nuggets were found in the veins, and one measured some 40 tons. It could not be moved, nor could it be blasted (large coppers simply absorb the shock and compress a bit, but don't blast apart). Thus, the mine employed parties of miners working around the clock on three shifts for months, to carve the nugget up by hand and haul the pieces out. I am told that historians have written the mine actually LOST MONEY by the time all the human labor was factored in. This sliver is the kind of filing they would chip off the large nugget until, bit by bit, they reduced it and smelted the whole thing. The old label indicates the piece was cut in 1860 (pre-Civil War!!) and provides the ultimate documentation you'd want for such a neat artifact. Nice brown patina also confirms the age. Comes with Hugh Ford early 1900's label and also former Edna Doughty collection with label.
RH02-07 - Embolite (Chlorargyrite) - ¥ 172414 Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia small cabinet, 7.3 x 6.9 x 4.4 cm (LARGE!) ex. Richard Hauck
Extremely rich small cabinet specimen of chlorargyrite crystals with minor cerussite (rare association!) from Broken Hill. These were found in the early 1900s and this would be consider5ed a VERY RICH SPECIMEN! The crystals range from brown to green in color and have a wet, vitreous luster - not so ugly in person as you might think. These specimens are hard to find and very historical, having come out of the ground prior to WWII. Minor bruising present at a couple of areas on the piece but given the size and richness, I think that is forgiveable. Old E. Mitchell Gunnell collection and Hauck collection labels included.
RH02-08 - Descloizite - ¥ 15086 SOLD Berg Aukas, Grootfontein, Namibia small cabinet, 6.0 x 5.0 x 3.6 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Dark, shiny cluster of descloizite crystals to over 2cm on a small amount of matrix. All of the crystals are well terminated , have deep color, and have no apparent damage, and are thus of exceptional quality. Great example of one of the less common Tsumeb minerals available? NO! This is why I show the label. THEY ARE NOT FROM TSUMEB but from Berg Aukas. Often, the miners there sold to dealers from Tsumeb and before you know it, everybody has a "tsumeb" descloizite. The errors persist commonly on the market to this day 20-30 years or more after the fact. Former Edna Doughty collection with label.
RH02-09 - Cobaltian Smithsonite with Hematite-included Quartz - ¥ 68966 SOLD Tsumeb, Namibia small cabinet, 5.9 x 3.5 x 3.3 cm ex. Richard Hauck
A beautiful, good-sized specimen with sharp pink rhombs of smithsonite to 8mm. This is an old classic smithsonite from Tsumeb. The smithsonite crystals are covering bright orange crystals of quartz to 2mm - an association I had not sene previously. Several damaged smithsonite crystals are present on the specimen but overall its in pretty good shape and nothing visually detracts. Its better in person because the quartz adds a colorful accent which has more appeal in person. Piece comes with old Conklin and Hauck labels.
RH02-10 - Magnetite - ¥ 64655 Silberberg Mine , Bodenmais, Bavarian Forest, Bavaria, Germany miniature, 5.0 x 4.9 x 2.6 cm ex. Richard Hauck
This is a very nice and old piece! Its from the Silberberg Mine , Bodenmais, Bavarian Forest, Bavaria, Germany. This Mine is closed for over 40 years now . Beautifully iridescent dodecahedron crystals of magnetite on massive magnetite from the old classic location of Bodermais, Bavaria, Germany. Minor muscovite covers part of the magnetite. The magnetite crystals come in various sizes up to about 1.8 cm across. This specimen came out of the ground many years ago and like many other minerals in the Hauck collection, is rarely seen on the market today. Great old Schortmann’s Minerals label (WWII era) as well as a couple of other previous labels accompany the piece. A MAJOR locality piece for what it is!
RH02-11 - Argentite - ¥ 81897 SOLD Schemnitz, Slovak Republic miniature, 4.3 x 4.3 x 2.2 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Incredible rich specimen of argentite crystals on matrix to 4mm. The argentite crystals are attractively draped with a nice gold layer of pyrite. These crystals have interesting , sharp form and are nicely spread across the matrix. The pyrite is preferentially coating the argentite, providing an interesting look to the piece; one side gold, one side metallic-grey. This is another super-rare European classic which is almost never seen on the US market today. Old Schortmann’s Minerals label comes with piece. That was a lot of money 60 years ago!
RH02-13 - Chalcocite - ¥ 17241 SOLD Bristol, Hartford Co., Connecticut thumbnail, 2.4 x 1.9 x 1.2 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Very sharp thumbnail specimen of chalcocite consisting of a group of several crystals to 2.1cm. The crystals have a dark , impressively uniform patina and a very classic form. These Conneticut chalcocites are very old (mid to late 1800s) and groups this sharp have always been highly desired.
RH02-14 - Cobaltite (rare large xl in matrix!) - ¥ 77586 SOLD Near Espanola, Foster Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, Canada miniature, 4.7 x 3.9 x 2.2 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Classic cubic crystals of cobaltite on a calcite matrix from Ontario, Canada....but of remarkable size for the locality! These crystals have a nice bright luster and are up to 1.2cm on edge. The specimen is very rich with many sharp crystals throughout the piece. This piece is from the Sudbury district, an area highly active in mining and one of the top locations in the world for cobaltite specimens in the old days. However, good display specimens were always rare, even then. This is one of the best I have seen. Former Edna Doughty collection with label.
RH02-16 - Galena - ¥ 38793 SOLD Mogul Mine, Silvermines District, County Tipperary, Ireland miniature, 4.3 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Classic, sharp twinned crystal of galena with minor pyrite from the old lead mining district of Tipperary County, Ireland. The galena has as great bright metallic luster with an interesting twin plane along the terminations. Some of the pyrite is also crystalline, with a shiny bright luster. These mines go back hundreds of years and crystals like this are very difficult to obtain. A superb miniature, for display purposes, as well! Currently, the actual minesite is operating as a business so trespassing is strong unadvised especially considering all the specimens are long gone (says MinDat)
RH1-32 - Copper pseudo after Azurite - ¥ 10345 Georgetown, Grant County, New Mexico thumbnail, 3.3 x 2.9 x 2.7 cm ex. Richard Hauck
This specimen once was a rosette of intergrown, bladed, azurite crystals which have been totally pseudomorphed by copper. The specimen exhibits a very nice old patina. These complete floaters are quite rare today, and were found in the 1940s through 1950s I am told. They show a remarkable complete replacement of azurite by copper, and are to my knowledge unique in their aspect, form, and size compared to other azurite pseudomorphs
RH1-06 - Azurite - ¥ 38793 Chessy, France miniature, 3.7 x 3.3 x 3.2 cm ex. Richard Hauck
This is a complete rosette of intergrown, royal blue, lustrous, azurite crystals from another long-closed locality. This specimen is also a complete floater, with no obvious points of attachment. "Chessylite" in this size and quality is hard to come by today and most is 100 years old or more! This one comes out of a Harvard collection, circa the early 1900s already.
RH1-58 - Azurite - ¥ 64655 Chessy, France small cabinet, 6.0 x 4.8 x 3.4 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Deep, neon blue, lustrous, crystals of azurite have formed two intergrown, rosettes, to 5.0 cm across. This oldtime specimen is also a complete floater, with no visible point of attachment. Very nice! This specimen is also a complete floater, with no obvious points of attachment. "Chessylite" in this size and quality is hard to come by today and most is 100 years old or more!
RH1-66 - Azurite - ¥ 51724 Chessy, France miniature, 5.0 x 4.7 x 3.8 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Lustrous, deep blue, azurite crystals are intergrown into a large rosette. Even neon blue highlights sparkle occasionly from this specimen. It is also a near floater. "Chessylite" in this size and quality is hard to come by today and most is 100 years old or more!
RH1-07 - Wulfenite - ¥ 51724 Mežica Mine, Mežica (Miess), Slovenia (former Serbia) miniature, 6 x 3.7 x. 3.7 cm ex. Richard Hauck
Wulfenite specimens from this area are rarely seen in dealers stocks. Specimens of this quality are rarer still. Butterscotch, lustrous, tabular, crystals of wulfenite, to .75 cm across, abound on a hollow crust. Usually these ar ejumbled plates with little definition, but the crystals on this aesthetic specimen stick up a bit more than usual
