A superb, textbook feldspar crystal. Not just is it big, but it is stark white, perched on a natural pedestal, and just an amazing display of perfection in symmetry in nature. The pics say it all. You do NOT see many feldspars of the quality you could put in a collection of fancy gem crystals and they hold their own. This one, though, does that. Ex Franz Saller collection of Bavaria, Germany; probably purchased in the 1980s . The piece is pristine, and complete all around - remarkably free of damage.

This is a true rarity, the likes of which I had never seen or heard of before for the locale: PURPLE prehnite crystals, supposedly colored by the same agent (manganese) that also makes vesuvianite from here go purple occasionally. The crystals have a definite lavender color in person, and are perched on a plate of minutely crystallized grossular garnet matrix. At the edge of the plate, brilliant, deep green garnets to 2 or 3mm form a sparkling contrast to the prehnites. These sharply crystallized prehnites, to 3 cm long and tapered like chisels, are exceptional for the species and locality. And, they seem quite unique. This specimen is from the collection of Franco Spertini, the mine geologist during the heyday of this operation (now, sadly, defunct and closed). As a side note, we purchased a number of the specimens from this collection for a future update on this site...but there is no other like this.

ELEGANT! In fact, one seldom sees such finely formed specimens in a miniature size from this mine. Most are bigger and bulkier. This features a central, curving, doubly-terminated, spinel twin of copper, measuring 5.1 cm in length. This graceful core crystal is offset at right angles by smaller parallel-growth spinel twin crystals. The crystals have a patina colored a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) which was so classic for these pieces. Aesthetic!

The crystals have a patina colored a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) . The largest crystal is a spinel twin measuring 5.0 cm in length. Classic form and style!

This is a doubly-terminated floater of a spinel twinned copper crystal , measuring 4.0 cm in length. The crystals have a patina colored a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) . Classic Champion Mine style, in this cute miniature. Note that many of these on the market are brightended by acid wash, but this remains in its natural patina and color.

Emanating from a central spine which itself is a giant, elongated spinel twinned copper crystal, are a series of parallel growth copper spinel-twins to 1.75 cm in length. The crystals have a patina colored a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) with the brighter red probably representing a thin coating of cuprite. In cross section, the specimen resembles a forest or a fishbone. Architecturally, this looks a lot like a fish skeleton and so you can see why the nickname "herringbone coppers" has been attached to these. Striking specimen, and a very stylish old classic . Out of all the Michigan coppers, this is really one of the few styles totally unique and recognizable to one specific mine.

A complete floater, this copper specimen looks like a growing bush or tree with the top much wider than the base. The whole specimen is composed of spinel twins of copper, elongated and graceful, to 6.7 cm in length. The patina color is a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) with the brighter red possibly being a coating of cuprite.Another fine sculptural copper from this classic mine. Like others here, it has immediately recognizable, complex form that is very distinct in the mineral world from other coppers. This piece is a robust, complete-all-around display quality

This graceful and aesthetic, arching copper specimen has spinel twins, to 3.3 cm in length, emanating from a central spine. This is CLASSIC style for the Champion finds! It is , however, unusually elegant in its presentation. The patina color is a rich brownish-red (untouched by acidizing) and this specimen can be viewed from more than one direction since it appears to be a floater. The back side is lightly covered in a crystal druse, probably calcite. Architecturally, this looks a lot like a fish skeleton and so you can see why the nickname "herringbone coppers" has been attached to these. A striking specimen, and a very stylish old classic . Out of all the Michigan coppers, this is really one of the few styles totally unique and recognizable to one specific mine. Absolutely elegant!

A smaller specimen, than others here, but with slightly more intense color , perhaps 10% more neon green. It has some small spots of damage, but displays really well overall. A beautiful piece from the old stash of dealer/collectors Consie and Dalton Prince (Houston, TX), was found a few flats of the most intensely-colored, sparkling austinite any of us had seen from Mexico. This material apparently came out in the 1970s and was still wrapped in the old newspapers, from when they stashed it away. I was stunned when I saw this - it has to be seen in person to get the true effect of the slight translucency combined with neon color and sugary lustre. It is not the biggest austinite crystals - these are druses layered in thick carpets - but it is surely the prettiest find I know of.

NOTE THAT Pseudomalachite is a PHOSPHATE and not a carbonate like "plain" malachite is - and is very rare, and often misidentified or simply not recognized at all by those who do not know. However, in person, material from at least this locality has a subtly different color and texture than malachite which also occurs here. This is a large, display-quality example of this relatively rare species, from one of the most important of localities for it. The biggest and best, most intensely colored material has come from here. It has a very pleasing, botryoidal , thickly layered growth of Pseudomalachite nicely perched on contrasting matrix. The thickness is over 1 cm in places, and you can see this from the sides. Impressive display quality specimen, From an old German collection.

An impressive example of the rare yellow (cadmian rich) varietal of smithsonite, from the most important locality for crystallized examples of this style. These came out of Tsumeb in a very few small pockets, through the late 1970s. Such pieces were always rare, and highly valued even locally. Crystals of this sharpness, and in such nice clusters, are uncommon today. This piece is complete alla round, and very 3-dimensional (more so in person), except only a small damaged knob at the bottom. It is, in person, slightly more brown-yellow than yellow-brown, as is typical for the finds. From an old German collection.

This specimen at first glance looks like it should be valued at double or triple, and indeed maybe I am pricing it down too much for the few small bits of damage present. Only on close inspection, can you see a few minor bits of edge wear on some crystals. Nevertheless, in the center, it features a stunningly lustrous, doubly-terminated and deeply colored crystal of dioptase measuring a full 2 cm, tip to tip! The lustre, the showiness , the sheer color intensity of the piece scream value, and it perhaps is worth more, but I got it in a deal from an old german collection and can pass it on. Dioptase of this quality and with crystals of this size, generally, is never inexpensive. These stopped coming out by the mid 1980s.

Malachite from Germany is one of those things you hear about, but seldom see for sale in good quality. This is an old specimen from an uncommon locale. It could be trimmed, actually, into a stellar display-quality miniature, with a little work (and probably worth more, too), but I thought i'd offer it big to start with. The cluster of malachite features individual chatoyant blades with brilliant silky lustre, and measures about 4 x 4 x 2.5 cm overall. A rare, and important, display-quality German classic from an Old german collection

Superb, translucent, lathelike crystals of alamosite make the bulk of this specimen, which is a major thumbnail example of the species and, aside from a few freak specimens, is of a pretty good quality as well. The black specks are melanotekite, though there may also be other minerals in association here which I am not identifying. Alamosite in good crystals is one of the more uncommon of Tsumeb rarities, and seldom seen for sale (at any price, but usually very high, when priced). From an old German collection, such pieces are rarely seen on the market today.
