MIXED CLASSICS AND RARITIES
March 2011

Robert Nowakowski is a well-known Michigan-based collector specializing today in Michigan Copper Country and Canadian Minerals.  He formerly collected worldwide minerals with a notable sub-specialty in rare-earth minerals. Other suites were Amethysts, Russian Minerals, and Zircons.  Bob rather aggressively polled most major dealers throughout the 1990s and early 2000's, always seeking our best big examples of crystallized rare earth species and zircons. I think the selection here reflects that pursuit, as many pieces are just impossible to find on the general market (then and now).  Bob is a long-time friend whom I have known for nearly 20 years, from my early days in the mineral business.  He decided to cull a large part of his subcollections to focus on obtaining premium Michigan pieces now,. To help him do this, we are posting these selections from his core suites with descriptions and prices as written by their owner, with a modest commission to me for the venue.  Also on these pages is added a special, exquisite Silver from Germany, recently put up for exchange by another longtime collector friend.

A dramatic, 3-dimensional specimen of stacked light-pink, lustrous manganocalcite rhombs radiating upward from the base. The crystals are very sharp and lustrous, and overall this is a very asthetic specimen with more crystals in one piece than you normally saw of this material when it wsa coming out in the 1980s-90s. Most specimens are smaller, or just a few crystals in cluster or on ugly matrix. I had always regarded this as one of the great examples of a South African manganocalcite. It came out of the Dr. Ludi von Bezing Collection in around 1999-2000 and remains the best of its type I have seen for sale. STRONGLY fluoresces, bright neon orange!

A very fine prismatic twin, from the classic locality that has produced these wonderful examples considered best of this particular habit. The three dimensional aspect, combined with the glassy surfaces and super-sharp angles, elevate this specimen's importance significantly. Few of this size were found and tehy commanded high prices in the late 1990s when they came out. Many of the larger ones needed repairs, and there is one neat repair about 1/3 of the way from the top, where a cleavage occurred ( horizontally) and was perfectly and nearly seamlessly rejoined . This crystal is large, super sharp and lustrous, hard to find today in this material.

A single very sharp, large euhedral crystal of zircon, exhibiting two sets of pyramids and two sets of prisms. Unusually large and lustrous from this famous locality, which is an ancient classic. Small fractures in the back of the specimen were stabilized carefully with a small amount of glue, and it is both solid and stable now.. Mass is 333 grams

Silver from Himmelsfurst Mine, Saxony, Germany [db_pics/new2011/Silver-Germany_Sandra.jpg]

The simplicity and elegance of this single wire drew my attention when I first saw it in the mid 1990s, and I have long thought it one of the most exquisite examples of the robust Himmelsfurst silver wires. This piece I bought and sold in the 90s, and now have it back by exchange with the collector who owns it. It is elegant, but not "bendy" and fragile as many smaller pieces are. For the size range, I still regard it highly amongst its peers as a special piece. The specimen is illustrated in the Mineralogical Record's book, Texas Collectors, in the Sandra Gee collection.

These created a stir when they premiered at Tucson around 2006 or so (if I recall rightly). They are huge, lustrous, deep green epidote crystals which are possessed of stunning symmetry. Few were Doubly terminated and free of damage as is this one. It is a stunning, long, lustrous crystal of this popular mineral, rarely seen in this quality. It turns out that the find was a one-off. No more ever came out after. Credit goes to the tragically deceased exploration geologist Campbell Bridges for bringing these to market. Today, few are available on the market and this was, for quality, one of the best at the time. 234 grams in mass

Dendritic, herringbone structure mimicking a delicate feather makes this a very aesthetic specimen. The beautiful combination of hues from the differing patinas, ranging from copper color to dark bronze to grey, adds character. A superb example from these finds, peaking in the early 2000's.

A very rare and unusual creature, this is a large phosphate crystal from San Diego County. Few large phosphates ever turn up in these gem pegmatites. This one features a large crystal of triphyllite, replaced by purpurite. An old specimen, from the Chris Korpi collection So far as I know, this large piece is unique except for a few small and insignificant examples

A textbook, floater crystal of zircon from Russia – translucent at edges, with a deep coffee color and a pretty internal shimmer. This crystal is sharp as a razor and perfectly symmetrical in addition to being quite large for the zircons from this locality. 33 grams. ex John Barlow Collection #2381

A very large and very sharp 6-cm zircon crystal, with smaller zircon crystals on a small portion of matrix. It has small damage/wear on the leading termination but in context to size and price, this is acceptable for me. This is a classic crystal from a classic old locality for the species! Specimens of this size are nearly impossible to obtain today and I have seen only a few in the last decade or so turn up, from old collections. Ex Rolf Wein Collection

A SUPERB cluster of sharp spinel crystals on calcite matrix, with that wonderful shoe-polish lustre. The specimen is dominated by a single crystal, 6-cm across, deep black in color; and with sharp faces. There are several unassuming contacts which are not offensive in the display angles, and the piece displays with a lot of beauty for a black crystal. 411 grams

800 grams, or approx 2 pounds in weight! A beautiful, blocky straw-colored crystal, with beveled faces and a bit of albite on the area near the base. The crystal has great translucency and the faces are very sharp. There a a few scattered dings along the left side, but really insignificant. A classic form and in superb condition, especially considering the size. These came out briefly in a few spurts in the late 1990s, and then I saw only a very few others in later years. This piece was purchased in the late 1990s at Tucson. This massive crystal is a lower price than comparable from Brazil or Pakistan would be, for a large topaz.

A beautiful encrustation pseudomorph of amethyst crystals after a scalenohedron of calcite, 9-cm long. Much of the calcite is missing now (dissolved away in nature) based on the light weight of the specimen. The crystal form of the calcite was faithfully preserved in teh sparkling amethyst cast, and the specimen is very asthetic overall.

A very significant zircon, on a matrix of calcite from a carbonatite occurrence. This is one of the finest examples, and the finest large example, I have seen of this material. Matrix pieces are rarely encountered from this locality. Most specimens were found in alluvial deposits, while this was collected directly from a quarry and thus has no "rolling" damage. There is admittedly a nearly invisible repair halfway down the crystal, over the matrix, but I consider this acceptable in a specimen of this magnitude. The zircon measures 11-cm long, is euhedral and is very lustrous. Both terminations are present.

An extraordinary specimen composed of distinct, angular crystals of magnetite pseudomorphed to hematite. A great piece with no damage save a tiny nick or two if you look ultraclosely. This is one of the more robust, dramatic examples I have had in awhile for this material. It is an exceptional example of the finds. 330 grams

A truly fantastic LARGE specimen of elbaite, and associations, which is very uncommon for this locale! The color of the crystals is a hot magenta red color ; and it is interesting because of its parallel-growth crystals, all terminated. A sharp quartz crystal sits at the base , for the important touch. An extraordinary example of the species, from a difficult to acquire locality, this is classic old "siberite" , as it was once called by European royalty who collected minerals. The piece was found in the late 1990s. 850 grams
