JEFFREY STARR MINERAL COLLECTION
Jeff Starr is a local Dallas collector, specializing in fluorites and aesthetic worldwide specimens. He is a friend and a local collector who has helped me in his spare time, with my own website updates and the gallery move. So, when he decided to cull his collection a bit at Tucson, I suggested that he could post them here on my site first (good for him, good for my customers too). He has taken his own photos and written his own descriptions, below. Enjoy!

Elba is famous for fine Tourmalines, but over the years it has also produced large, very impressive Pyrites associated with Galena. They are highly desired, especially pieces with the combination to sparkling blades of hematite such as this one (found in the 1970s, if I recall). There are three distinct pyritohedrons on Galena matrix. The largest is about 6 cm, and the others between 5-6 cm. Incredible size and quality! The specimen is contacted in the back, but the presentation side is superb. The great form and luster of the Pyrites is dazzling and contrasts with hematite. The pics are good, but Pyrites are hard to shoot. It is even better in person. An amazing specimen for what it is and I usually see these at much higher prices

Very attractive specimen from the recent (around 2008) finds in Peru. It features an entire fan of sharp, tabular, highly lustrous, gemmy, grey Barite crystals. The smaller anterior Barite blades beautifully frame the main 2.6 cm blade. These Barite crystals are known from this locality for their amazing form and color, and you can see why. This is a great piece from this recent find.

Beautiful and complex single crystal of the now-famous Brazilian Spessartines. A floater , complete all around ! The luster, form, and gemminess are outstanding. This is an excellent miniature from a now classic find, and impresses in person.

This is a competition level miniature of the finest tier, a glassy cluster of the famous bladed Barites from the well-known discovery at the Meikle Mine in Nevada. The luster and gemminess of these crystals is amazing. From the late 90s production, still the best out of all pockets! They are sharp, clear, and strong. The largest of these is about 1.7 cm on edge. In fact, the cluster is so rich and complex, it is hard to get a good visual with the camera. Even more impressive in person.

Superb specimen of light mint-green Cuprian Adamite crystals, up to about 1 cm in size. Several dozen of these lustrous, gemmy-to-translucent crystals line the limonite vug. The crystals are unusually GLASSY : They are brilliant, reflective, and super-sharp. It is highly fluorescent as well. A very fine, high quality piece from the famous Ojuela Mine, from finds of the mid-2000's. Gorgeous color is distinct from older material, and this style is seldome seen except for a few special pockets.

A sculptural complex of gemmy, colorless Gypsum crystals from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, which is famous for its Gypsum crystals, among many other fine minerals. The luster on the Gypsum is superb, and the crystals form almost a bowl shape. In some ways, the open core reminds me of a ship, in other ways this cluster visually harkens to Superman's crystal fortress. Either way, the aesthetics on the piece are excellent. It is so shiny and well-formed it could almost be a piece of polished acrylic sculpture. It is really unusual and we have all seen so many to make that call from!

Superb combination of classic Zeolites from India, growing on a stalk of drusy Chalcedony. The largest Apophyllite is 2.1 cm long and has three distinct layers. The outer layers are gem clear, as is the smaller Apophyllite near the bottom. With the larger one, the layers reflect some of the beautiful salmon-colored Stilbite blades, thus imparting some of the orange tinge that the photos pick up. The Stilbite blades range up to 1.6 cm. For sheer quality, this is one of the finest of these specimens I have seen. It is MUCH BETTER IN PERSON AND IS A STRIKING MINIATURE of competition quality that is an order of magnitude better in real life than in the pics.

Well-proportioned and very attractive, this combination is also representative for the famous Shigar Valley of northern Pakistan. The beautiful and gemmy Fluorite has a complex habit, appealing sea-foam green color, and excellent fluorescence. It is 1.2 cm across. The Fluorite rests perfectly at the base of a lustrous, striated 3 cm Schorl. There are several small Schorls that grow out near the base, creating a very appealing accent to the overall piece. The main Schorl crystal has the classic trigonal 'Mercedes' termination. An excellent, aesthetic piece.

Excellent and intricate grouping of three highly intergrown, pastel blue cubes of Fluorite to 2.1 cm across. The luster is superb, and the clarity is high. On close inspection, you can see a delicate purple zone just below the faces. Sitting on well-formed Quartz crystals, this is a fabulous miniature example of why this mine is known for producing such incredible combination specimens

The Auglaize Quarry has produced many fine Fluorite specimens, but very few more beautiful and sharp than those in this cluster. There are eight transparent, lustrous crystals of nearly colorless Fluorite with rich, violet cores, stacked in a way that all are visible. The coup de grace is the top crystal, which is 1 cm in length and has excellent clarity, very good luster, and a razor-sharp core that gives this, and all the others, a true beauty all their own. Absolutely a world class toenail! These were highly sought after in the Ohio community in the 70's and 80's, and few outside the locals have pieces like this.

Mined about 1990, this excellent combination piece has the classic gemmy Fluorites with dramatic beveled edges that are so indicative of Shang Bao. These are intergrown with sharp, gemmy Quartz crystals, all on top of a layer of Pyrite and matrix. The largest of the Fluorites is 1.7 cm across. What sets this apart from the others, without question, are among the finest sharp purple phantoms that I have seen from this well-known mine. The Fluorites have an octahedral purple phantom in the center of the crystal, and radiating from each corner of the octahedron is a sharp purple line that goes directly to the surface of the crystal. Simply striking.

Bewitching and graceful, this arborescent specimen of wire Silver on a complex and rich Silver base has aesthetics in spades. The picture says it all, really. A fabulous specimen, one of my favorites though I am more a fluorite collector than anything else - and my only major silver that ever floored me enough to purchase. This was from an early find here in 2007. For sheer elegance, it is hard to beat in this size range and anything similar from Germany or Peru costs more, anyways. Photo by Joe Budd

Kuiu Island in Alaska has produced some very fine , though small Fluorites over the years. Some are octahedral or as in this case, sharp very distinct cubes. This line of crystals snakes along an attractive, drusy Quartz matrix, and the largest crystal is about .7 cm. The luster is silky and beautiful, giving the gemmy crystals a definite, eye-catching pearly glow. Definitely the best of the Kuiu Island Fluorites that I have seen over collecting fluorites for several decades

Published in conjunction with the incredible 2008 "American Mineral Treasures" Tucson Show, the AMT book has proven to be one of the finest mineral books ever publshed. The forty-plus American localities are lavishly illustrated - quality photographs of superb specimens and localities combined with history and provenance information. To help subsidize the book and keep its original cost to the public down near $100, there were a very limited number of sponsorships solicited to generate funds; and for them this very special copy was made. The promised special edition leatherbound was...more than what was promised. The leather and handiwork are so fine, they literally had to grow the leather for this and try binding a few times before it got to the level demanded for by the editor, Gloria Staebler. Each book is handmade throughout, and slightly unique in texture. The level of quality is so demanding that they are being produced only at the rate of about a dozen per year so far. Completely hand-made of exclusively American products (right down to the hand-sanded leathers), only 90 of these will ever be produced. This is Number 27 of 90. It is already a classic - rare and in great demand. (NOTE FROM ROB - I THINK JEFF'S PRICE VERY FAIR. THESE ARE UNOBTAINABLE AND ALL IN PRIVATE LIBRARIES. I ORDERED A FEW MYSELF AND INTEND TO KEEP THEM FOR THE LONG TERM) All Content and Design ©1996-2012 The ArkenstonePowered by http://mineralwebsites.comMineral Specimens by species; or by specimen id. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
