We are fortunate to offer a select group of very fine select rubellites - the red gem variety of tourmaline. These are all cut from the same parcel of rough, mined in Nigeria in around 2003 and stashed until now. NO FURTHER material of this combination of intensity and internal brightness has been mined since, in any quantity, and stones above 10 carats are now going up rapidly in value. This is a most handsome pear-shaped portuguese cut of rich red color. It has slight purpley tones when viewed from the sides. It is very transparent and nearly clean to the eye - though our hypersensitive high resolution camera picks up more veils than the human eye sees easily, please note. The unusual designer cut lends itself well to a unique pendant either with or without accent stones. A great value for the money as rubellites of this particular material in the size are now scarce on the market. Untreated .

We are fortunate to offer a select group of very fine rubellite -- the gem red variety of tourmaline. These are all cut from the same parcel of rough, mined in Nigeria in around 2003 and stashed until now. NO FURTHER material of this intensity and internal brightness has been mined since, in any quantity. .This gem is for collectors or jewelry connoisseurs who like deeper color saturation. Rubellites don't get richer in color than this. But make no mistake, this oval portuguese cut is bright in a case or on the finger - it is not "too dark" by any means. It is just not the traditional hue, and to us that makes it more interesting. It is very transparent and more clean to the eye in person - though our hypersensitive high resolution camera picks up more veils than the human eye sees easily, please note. An exceptionally sized stone that would look stunning with diamond accents. Untreated

Another oval portuguese cut that is very bright and presents extremely well. The screaming hot pink color is saturated and intense, and the transparency is almost total (it is only very slightly included). A high quality tourmaline gem for the collector or for jewelry wear. This round portuguese cut gem is simpy put a flashy, attention-grabbing stone! Rich pink and with hints of maroon or purple, only very slightly included and super bright - what more could a collector want? A killer gem in all respects. Highly recommended - Our favorite stone of the entire rubellite lot. Untreated .

NO FURTHER material of this combination of intensity and internal brightness has been mined since, in any quantity, and stones above 10 carats are now going up rapidly in value. The largest gem in the suite is this cushion portuguese art cut with an unusal, checkerboard crown. The rich red color and wonderful size create a stunning display presence. This one is perfect for a rough-and-cut or it can make for a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Stones that are this clean, in excess of 20 carats, are now getting hard to find on the market (especially at a reasonable price). Untreated .

Tanzanite from Merelani Mine, near Arusha, Tanzania [db_pics/new2011/TANZANITE-TANZANIA-5-92CTS-G6-9.jpg]

Tanzanite is the color-changing blue/purple variety of the mineral zoisite discovered in the Merelani Hills of Northern Tanzania in 1967. The name was coined by Tiffany and Company, and excellent promotion and market acceptance has made tanzanite an impressive investment commodity over the years. However, truly fine tanzanite gems of a highly desirable, deep-blue color are not readily available in the market. Many gems sold do not show the slight hints of purple flashes you want to see, as you look into the blue face. This round cut is superb on all counts -- it has a rich and fabulous color, a somewhat rare round cut and is top quality for the species. Highly recommended for a spectacular pendant or ring stone, this circular cut is designed to emphasize sparkle and brightness. If you were looking at such a stone on the market, you would have to assume it was heat treated. However, we consigned the piece from a known source who cut it from untreated rough, and can provide the assurance that it is natural color. NOTE lesser quality tanzanite is...cheaper. This is a superior quality and cut, and goes for a bit of a premium

Another unusual spinel of excellent quality that nicely complements the blue specimen above. This oval portuguese cut has a strong lavendar hue - top color for its type, if you want to classify it. There is a slight "window" to the gem, but it's both large and clean with superb clarity. Mineral collectors are familiar with red spinel, but richly colored specimens of other hues are in high demand by gem collectors as the species is both wearable and underpriced in the public market relative to their more famous colored brethren, the rubies & sapphires. In fact, fine cut spinels often trade with a higher desirability than similarly-priced colored stones of other species, as you get more for your money with a spinel (according to Wise: Secrets of the Gem Trade - a great book you can buy on Amazon). Accoprding to his book's recommendations, this is a rare fancy colored spinel of a size (over 5 carats) to be considered investment grade.

Mineral collectors are familiar with red spinel, but richly colored specimens of other hues are in high demand by gem collectors as the species is both wearable and underpriced in the public market relative to their more famous colored brethren, the rubies & sapphires. This is a rare, intense blue spinel of a size (over 5 carats) to be considered investment grade. In fact, fine cut spinels often trade with a higher desirability than similarly-priced colored stones of other species, as you get more for your money with a spinel (according to Wise: Secrets of the Gem Trade - a great book you can buy on Amazon). A small fluid inclusion is useful to prove natural origins, and not eye visible. This jewel is perhaps best described as a "designer stone" for a collector or use in unique jewelry. Cut by Spectrum Award winning faceter Mark Kaufman.  The beautifully oval portuguese cut is both very clean and exceptionally bright, in excellent proportion. Simply put, an impressive gem of superb quality to wear or invest in.

Spessartine Garnet from Jos Plateau, Nigeria [db_pics/new2011/SPESSARTINE-NIGERIA-8-7CTS-G3-4.jpg]

This is a garnet of unusally high quality from recent finds of early 2010! The photo is accurate and yet doesn't do this beauty justice with its rich, screaming orange color that's simply riveting in person. This small batch of spessartines had a natural, untreated, red tone to the normal orange color that gives them a look more similar to padparascha sapphire , at first glance. The color is reminiscent of some spinels. It is NOT a normal color you expect to see in a garnet and so these gems really stand out for several reasons. The gem is very clean and bright as you would wish in a garnet (even in low lighting conditions), and it's important to note that the stone has a perfectly even color distribution, with no zoning. Specimens like this are rare and are suitable both for jewelry or a wonderful part of a collector's rough-and-cut set.

The softness of anglesite makes it challenging to cut, so stones are rare collector's items and in this size all the more so. This is a fantastic and very large example of rich, lemon-yellow color from the best locality in the world for the species (with finds mostly from 20-30 years ago). The oval portuguese cut has been faceted to proper angles, a challenge to even top cutters. So it has a wonderful brightness you do not often see in anglesite cut stones. This is thus a hard to replace rarity suitable for a museum collection or connoisseur displayof rare cut gems. It is not wearable due to its hardness, though. This source crystal was brought out in the 1970s and was eventually sold for cutting. It was custom cut by Spectrum-Award winner Mark Kaufman.

Spinel from Mogok gem tract, Burma [db_pics/new2011/Spinel-6.88ct-5.jpg]

Spinel has traditionally been an underappreciated gemstone, although its durability makes it suitable for all jewelry uses and its beauty rivals almost any gem species. This large, brilliant-cut oval beautifully proves the point. This superb stone is top grade in color, cut and internal clarity. It has totally even color saturation. It has unbelievable visual impact in person. This is an exquisite connoisseur stone of the finest quality. Highly recommended for the sophisticated collector for all three of the reasons folks invest to own a gem: investment, collectibility, and wearability. This stone was brought out in the early 90's and remained in a private collection until now. An old native cut was updated and perfected in a recut by Spectrum-Award winner Mark Kaufman.
