CUPRITE (with silver)
from the
Poteryaevskoe Mine, Western-Siberian Region, Russia

These specimens are from several recent pockets found between June and August of 2010, at this working mine complex for a number of base metals. Specimens from this locality, which we had not even heard of before, started to trickle out in varying qualities in 2008 (marshite crystals) followed by more diversity in 2009 (copper crystals, cuprites on copper and in clusters alone). We followed the production with interest through several Russian sources and asked to be kept apprised of major new finds, after these "appetizers" came out. Copper was previously thought to be the most desirable, and we suspect a number of cuprite pockets were simply not collected at first because their value (and significance for species) was not recognized by the miners compared to the bright and shiny copper.  At Springfield in August, my Russian sources all started pinging excitement over new pockets of larger cuprites that had been collected  - more carefully collected and handled afterwards than in the past, as word of their value from the preceding 2009 Tucson show (and internet sales afterwards) reached back to the source and the miners. So, I was happy to see a new find of cuprites come to market, generally with considerably less damage than the previous finds. We picked specimens from five different sources, among whom the finds were split. Unusual in the lot were a number of crystals  of cuprite showing a novel association with native silver (so far as I know I cannot recall seeing cuprite with silver upon it, from any other locale). Although most cuprites with silver association showed dull lustre, not all did, and we selected those when the cuprite also was of good quality. A very few specimens showed association with small crystals of iodargyrite, of which one was selected for this update as well. Presented below are just over 25 specimens selected from approximately 700 pieces we saw  in the last few months. Note that there are ALSO new finds of cuprite on copper, and of copper crystals in several habits, all very good material. But for me, the significance of the cuprites , in terms of how good they are for the species and from a new locale, made them my focal point in acquisition..

A superb miniature with fat, sharp crystals in a balanced cluster, that is complete all around. There is only contact, a small area where it touched matrix, on a small spot in the rear-bottom. It is pristine otherwise, all around. The crystals reach 3 cm across. This is one of the best miniatures we have seen, and it has the very rare translucent surface which only about 1 in 100 cuprites from this find possess (when very strongly backlit, it is 1-2 mm translucent). The lustre is also very high on this style, like glass and more than on the other style of cuprite from the locale. A small trace of associated silver is present. The overall symmetry, lustre, and beauty of this piece is hard to describe in photos - suffice to say that we have handled or seen over a thousand pieces from this production, including what i am sure are the best specimens in a very high price range, and this piece ranks with them for quality. It is , i believe, one of the finest minaitures produced.

This is a massive, large cuprite specimen that features a single crystal of 5.5 cm attached to a smaller crystal of 3.2 cm, to make a very 3-dimensional and robust cluster. The lustre is very good for this style, and it looks "polished" though of course it is not. In stronger light, you can see the reflectivity is greater (bottom-right). The crystal is huge, very robust and impressive, in a way hard to communicate ion the photos. This specimen would, if perfect, cost in the $25,000 range as a few others have. It looks good visually, but I need to admit it has some contact on the bottom, and the backside, and the tips of the smaller sidecar 3.2 cm cuprite are a little damaged. . Nevertheless, this is an impressive piece, and at a reduced price for damage or contact that is invisible unless you look closely, so that it presents from the front as one of the more important pieces.

A super thumbnail! This specimen appears to be a complete floater and is composed of three, intergrown octahedrons of dark red cuprite, to 1.6 cm in length. Up close you can see a few spongy masses of native silver, to 4 mm in length, in association and for contrast. While there were many thumbnails , few are such nice and pristine clusters

Aesthetically perched high up on smaller cuprite crystals is a slightly flattened octahedron of splendent, dark red cuprite measuring 3 cm in length. The large crystal is also doubly terminated and complete all around except for a very tiny small contact point on one back edge. The piece is extremely elegant, as far as these go, and displays well. The lower half of the specimen hosts feltlike mats of native silver, in small dendritic crystals growing amongst the cuprite crevasses (a highly unusual association, as a bonus!)

An equant and well formed octahedron, complete all around ! This crystal is SUPERB and sharp, with a brilliant lustre. At 3 cm on edge, it is large for the find. It sits flat on its own for easy display and is VERY impressive in person. For the collector who wants a single, significant crystal from the find, this would be hard to beat in the price range. It shows all faces 360 degrees, and is contacted only on the bottom.

The highlights of this specimen are the two parrallel growth, metallic and dark red, octahedrons of cuprite, each measuring 2.5 cm in length. Not only are the two crystals the same size, they are both doubly terminated and show off many points spraying in all directions, for a very 3-dimensional effect. A wonderful miniature , better in person !

An interconnected cluster of splendent, dark red, octahedra is surmounted by a single, large cuprite crystal, measuring 2.1 cm in length. Dramatic display from thhree sides, though the back side has been contacted. The piece is listed for about half the price one would think, looking at the size and display of the major crystal, only because there are a few tiny bruises on the front side, to the tips of the flanking small crystals. This detracts a little bit visually if you look close, but not form the overall impact or significance of the piece.

Superbly crystallized, this doubly terminated octahedron of splendent, dark red cuprite, measuring 4 cm in length, and is nearly pristine on the display side (and contacted on back where it grew from matrix). It is, in fact, pristine except only a few very small dings, one on the bottom tip. The lustre and surface appeal is crazy good - so bright in strong light that it looks metallic black instead of dark red, in fact. The crystal is imposing and dramatic, and for its size one of the more significant single crystals here and priced reasonably as the back side is contacted, though it presents so impressively from the front. The large size of the octohedron is signifiant

Rising from a bit of matrix is a cluster of cuprite octahedra that strat small at the bottom of the specimen, and are surmounted by crystals at the apex to 1.8 cm in length. The crystals are exceptionally bright and splendent, slightly translucent and of a deep red color. Only at the mid-rear (on the backside) of the specimen is there noticeable damage , the piece otherwise being complete. On very close inspection, there are also a few minor subtle bits of wear to the left edge of the top cuprite cluster, but this is not immediately seen unless you go looking for it (though the piece would be more expensive were this not the case). So , overall, its a very fine display quality miniature, with about the brightest lustre of any here, and an unusual association with bright native copper growing in the center.

With crystals growing out on all sides, much like a stalactite, this complete-all-around floater specimen displays from any angle, and both vertical and horizontal. It has metallic octahedrons of dark red cuprite, to 1 cm in length. The silvery spots you see are just that -native silver, microcrystallized in some cracks and crevasses amongst the cuprite (and more visible in person as it is hard to photo both the lustre and the depth at same time). A highly unusual association!

This is one of the few VERY complete psuedomorphs we have seen from the deposit, over its run from 2008-2011. Most pseudomorphs are only partial, still very much cuprite and showing cuprite on some faces. This piece is complete all around and has great patina, on the intrictae copper crystals (which reach 2 cm). Interestingly, this is not a smooth copper pseudomorph , as with for example the material from New Mexico or Tsumeb in which copper replaces azurite or cuprite respectively. Here, the replacement seems to have happened in a more intricate process, resulting in small crystals of copper atop the actual pseudomorph, or comprising it. It looks more like a biological invasion than the typical replacement pseudomorph surface. Complete all around, and aesthetic

This is a solid mass composed of brilliantly metallic, sharp octahedrons of dark cuprite to 1.5 cm in length. The luster on these crystals is particularly vivid and almost glassy. It is very hard to photograph and get both depth and lustre to show accurately! For contrast, the comparatively dull spots you see in the photo are felt mats of native crystallized silver, spread throughout. The piece is complete all around, 360 degrees, and is particlarly impressive in person

This imposing small cabinet specimen is our largest cluster, from purchases of material made by picking from 7 different lots that came to market through different dealers over the last 4 major shows. Composed of several dozens of crystals, this specimen is composed of SHARP octahedrons of dark red cuprite, up to 1.2 cm in length. It is very unusual, with so many crystals and such 3-dimensional exposure, that very few show any contact/damage at all (it is essentially pristine, really). This piece looks good vertical or horizontal, and is one of the larger undamaged specimens of this quality which we saw in the various lots at the Denver and Munich shows. The piece is richly associated with feltlike mats of native silver, in small dendritic crystals growing amongst the cuprite crevasses (a highly unusual association, as a bonus!)

Remarkably, this pristine crystal is perched so it shows 5 of the 6 octohedral terminations. Simply beautiful aesthetic, sharp form, and a brilliant lustre make this one of the finest pieces in the update!
