New Chinese Minerals featuring major 2011-2012 finds from Inner Mongolia
Recently, new finds of mineral specimens from China have slowed down. Old classic localities are producing slowly, and recognizably less good pieces than even a few years ago. However, as mineral dealing and the education of mineral miners grows throughout China (rapidly!), more is coming to light from new regions. In particular, the hot locality of 2011 and going onwards into the next decade will be Inner Mongolia. There is a cluster of mines around the city of Chifeng, in this northern province of China, that has produced gorgeous fluorites and calcites, as well as important rarities such as helvite, borcarite, and ilvaite. In many ways, the deposits here resemble the richness and variety of Dalnegorsk when at its peak in the 1980s.
The most colorful and novel find here was , to me, the large, hot-pink manganoan calcites. I have tried to buy up many over the last year, and it seems that the supply of good ones is now gone, even in China. I think these will be remembered as a modern classic, and the deposit does not seem to be yielding more. Please note the photos were taken under our standard halogen lighting, and the pink color is actually much more rich in person, particularly under normal fluorescent lighting.

This is one of the few really large pink calcites recovered in good condition, that we are aware of. Most were small, or big and damaged. This is so different from any other calcite style we have seen - an intense pink cluster composed of intergrown "wheat sheaves" of elongated manganoan calcite crystals, with an intense pink coloration to them (stronger , richer pink color in fluorescent light as opposed to halogen light, under which these photos were shot). The specimen here, which is the size of a large cauliflower and the weight of a bowling ball, is complete all around with only some contacts in back and a few trivial small bruises or dings. This is from a series of pockets which produced such pieces in mid-2011. Seems that since then, new pieces of this style are more uncommon. I believe these will be remembered as a contemporary classic, as well as for their beauty. The pink, manganoan-rich calcite is fluorescent orange-red under UV light. This specimen is complete all around. It is 15 pounds in weight! It displays dramatically on its custom lucite base. Note also that the pink color saturation seems to be volumetric - in other words, these bigger pieces are actually slightly more rich pink, in normal lighting.

A strangely shaped cluster of intergrown calcites, with good pink color. The shape and apttern of this cluster are the result of intergrowth with quartz crystals during the formation of calcite in this pocket, and some of the grooves and straight lines you see on the calcite "stalk" are where it was constrained in growth, we think. A beautiful and highly unusual specimen that is unlike other calcites we have seen from the mine, as yet. The slightly pink, manganoan-rich calcite is fluorescent orange-red under UV light. A highly interesting "intergrowth" combination where the quartz either grew through the calcite, or the calcite grew around the quartz - I cannot say which. The contrast of crystal habit is interesting, and it stands nicely on a base. The slightly pink, manganoan-rich calcite is fluorescent orange-red under UV light.
Gorgeous and complex coloration, combined with a total transparency, makes this Shangbao Mine piece stand out from its peers, many of which tend to be more simple mixes of color, or smaller crystals if this gemmy. Alternating highlighted edges of purple , and purple basal faces on the modified cuboctohedral crystals, contrast with the teal blue color of the fluorite core. The larger fluorite crystal atop is 4.5 cm across, almost two inches! The sidecar crystal is unusual in that it IS complete, but looks like half a crystal - as if a knife sliced it cleanly through during growth, and then the surface continued growing to form a new layer of skin over the core. So, you can look right into its middle. It probably formed as a constrained growth against a now-missing dolomite or feldspar crysatl, giving it that straight edge. The two crystals together are perched nicely atop the knoll of dolomite to display to their maximum extent, and complete all around. The piece has a color and transparency that make it glow, even with only minimal backlighting.
These are the most robust, large ilvaite crystals ever seen - even this piece is fatter and thicker than nearly all ilvaite from other localities I had seen before. It is particularly well-balanced for the size, with gorgeous, jet-black ilvaite with good luster. This is nearly complete all around 360-degrees except for a few very minor spots of damage (broken crystal tips), and has the complex multiple-termination style that is the less common of several habits from this new find. This was found in the fall of 2011.
